The Magic of Photoshop

Here's a couple before and after photoshop tricks from this weekend's shoot.

This first photo depicts my traditional twist on the posed altar shots following the ceremony. Here I used a portable studio light positioned on the ground just behind the bride to illuminate her veil and the couple’s silhouette against the background. Since there wasn't an electrical outlet handy, I simply ran the light's extension cord (to the left of the bride) trailing down the aisle.

In Photoshop I cropped the couple, adjusted the shadows & highlights and played with a little light post production fill flash. I cloned the electrical cord out and managed to blend the carpet where it had shown signs of wear.

In this second example I put the images side by side to make the differences even more noticeable. Here the couple was perched above me on a bridge as I shot from a shore below. The bridge had signs of bird droppings and excessive rust in spots. There was also an unsightly orange/red stake stuck in the ground in the lower right hand corner that reflected in the water. I removed the stake, cleaned up the railing of the bridge and slightly adjusted the saturation.

Jenny Roe & Mike Nelson ~ June 9th, 2007 ~ Lemont/Oak Brook, Illinois

A very BIG congratulations to Jenny Roe & Mike Nelson who were wed yesterday, June 9th, 2007, at St. Alphonsus in Lemont. The Nelsons held a wonderful reception later that evening at the always elegant Oak Brook Hills Marriott.

Jenny & Mike were the first clients to book my services back on August 15th, 2006 and it's been almost a whole year of building anticipation for both of us leading up until their wedding day.

My assistant Amy Aiello and I met Jenny at her folk’s house in Homer Glen for preparation shots. Jenny's sisters (and Bridesmaids) Heather, Melissa & Amy were on hand to assist us in snapping detail shots of invitations, flowers, the dress & accessories while Jenny arrived slightly late from an appointment at the salon. Soon we were in their backyard capturing family photos under the bright blue sky. Their limo arrived in style - a brand new 2007, 14 passenger BMW X5 stretch limo on custom paint-matched 22" rims from Exotic Coach - and transported my assistant, the bridal party & family to the ceremony as I took off early for the church to grab shots of the groom and his groomsmen.

Mike was ready with his groomsmen George Lagone (Best Man), Alec Wood & Bill Reil along with ushers Patrick Lynch & Patrick Riley and Matt & Kevin Roe. The group was a pleasure to work with and didn't let the threat of cicadas nearby bug us during our shots.

As the Bride arrived, the church was near capacity as if it were a Sunday service as almost every seat in the house was occupied. The ceremony began promptly at 2pm and was followed by immediate family formal shots. I made short work of photos involving extended family so we could enjoy fun shots with friends & close family comprising the entire bridal party. After pulling out every exciting shot in my arsenal, from the groomsmen holding up the bride at the altar to the infamous "jump shot" off the stairs of the church, I loaded up my gear and headed out to the reception.

Mike & Jenny held court outside on the lawn of the Oak Brook Hills Marriott as their hundreds of guests streamed outside to soak up the sun, sip a few cocktails and enjoy the sounds of a band that accentuated the mood of the upscale ambiance.

During cocktail hour my assistant canvassed the reception hall with referral cards, set up the backdrop for portraits and surveyed detail shots of the room before guests arrived as I grouped large parties of both the Roe and Nelson clan outside near a scenic golf course.

Introductions came a bit late as guests couldn’t get enough of the beautiful weather outside. John Ciccone of Sounds Abound mobile D.J. service did an excellent job throughout the evening MC’ing the merriment. Before dinner was served, the couple was honored with a few toasts from both the Best Man & Maid of Honor but it was Jenny’s father, Tom ‘T-Roe’ Roe, who had the best speech of the night reminding guests of Mike’s recent graduation from medical school and the couple’s latest condo purchase in Chicago.

After sharing their first dance along with the traditional father/daughter and mother/son dances, the couple led an energized party on the floor all night. The reception hall was on fire from guests cutting loose so much so that the evening actually went until 1am!

Congratulations again to Mike and Jenny. Have a great honeymoon in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. When you get back, you’ll have many exciting photos to preview and many wonderful memories to relive. Thank you for your original confidence in my abilities. I am sure you will be very delighted with the moments captured and created on your perfect day!
