The updated Grainger Hall of Gems at Chicago's Field Museum boasts a new and unique way to propose marriage to your loved one. With renovations to the gallery, a dedicated case has been installed with lighting designed specifically to showcase the diamond ring. Most of Phish's 40,000 fans strolled in Sunday morning to hear their first ever full-length unplugged set and were treated not only to great music by the band but also complimentary coffee and donuts shaped in the form of an 8.

Phish guitarist, Trey Anastasio warned fans “we’re gonna play a lot of mellow tunes” and encouraged them to sit down beneath the baking southern California sun which reached 90 degrees without a cloud in the sky during the 18 song set. Anastasio later apologized for asking everyone to sit while he admitted, “I have ADHD, I can’t sit either,” before closing the set with the classic “McGrupp & the Watchful Hosemasters.”

Phish performed three sets Saturday, October 31st, 2009, covering the Rolling Stones’ famed 1972 release "Exile On Main Street" as part of its Halloween tradition of covering another artist’s album in its entirety.

The band broke the news by handing out a “Phishbill” - a riff on a traditional theater playbill - to 40,000+ fans as they entered the concert area of the band’s Festival 8 site Saturday afternoon.

Sharon Jones, the lead singer of the Dap-Kings, sang backup with the group in addition to Manhattan native, Dave Guy on trumpet, David Smith on trombone, Tony Jarvis on sax and Saundra Williams on back-up vocals supporting the group during its double album set.

Burble (above) floats above spectators in response to infra-red signals and its immediate environment, changing color as pulses of light controlled by the public creating coherent patterns across its surface. It's a spectacular, futuristic sculpture made from helium-filled balloons packed with LEDs and infrared sensors and strapped to a hexagonal grid.

Each of the 140 hexagons has seven large helium balloons attached to it. These contain the sensors, LEDs and microcontrollers that enable the balloons to converse with each other and the participants below to create patterns of color across the honeycomb grid.

The grid is assembled on the ground, then tethered as the balloons are inflated. When the rope is cut, the whole structure floats upwards, anchored by a 30m long handlebar, which the participants hold on to.

Participants then “interact” with Burble by twisting, turning, pulling or pumping the handle, resulting in pulses of colour spreading throughout the floating structure.

Inside each of the balloons, you’ll find a circuit board with six LEDS — two each of red, green and blue — and two batteries to power it. The circuit board has been programmed to generate colour sequences in the LEDs from signals received by an attached infrared sensor which is in “conversation” with both the other balloons and the handlebar below. This has been embedded with a number of sensors — like the one used in the Nintendo Wii video game controller that translates physical movement into a signal. That signal, in turn, creates a corresponding light pulse in the balloons overhead.

The color and the duration of the luminance depends on the spatial position of each balloon, in that each one reacts differently depending on how close it is to other balloons, as well as its history of previous responses to signals already received. In essence, each balloon has a memory, and this governs its behaviour, along with environmental factors.

At the entrance to the concert field was an elevated area partially covered by peaked tents that looked out onto the lush concert field ringed in palm trees that Phish lighting designer Chris Kuroda would individually illuminate at night. Here at "The Overlook" attendees got the chance to enjoy a Bloody Mary Bar, a movie area showing vintage Halloween classics, archival Phish video - not to mention The World Series and NFL games - a massive 100 foot Ferris Wheel and an internet cafe.

Between The Overlook and the stage was The Coil (above) - a large swirled snake structure that hosted multiple art installations, interactive works and performance art.

Phish in 3D
AEG Network Live filmed all eight Phish sets for a 3D movie that will be released theatrically in 2010. The release comes after the company that is a division of the firm promoting Festival 8 releases another 3D concert film of the Dave Matthews Band Dec. 11-17 in major theater chains including Regal Cinemas that are equipped to show 3D movies. That film will include additional performances by Ben Harper and Gogol Bordello. Matthews, Harper and Bordello were filmed at the 2009 Austin City Limits, All Points West and Lollapalooza festivals, but John Rubey, executive producer and president of Network Live, said his crew is getting so much good footage at Festival 8, and Phish has such a large following, that Phish will be the lone artist in its concert film. AEG's Tim Cannon said "it might be a challenge to get all of this weekend's footage into just one film".

You gotta love the creativity of some couples!

Kevin Heinz and Jill Peterson have captured the attention of the world and become viral video sensations with their incredible wedding processional in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Though the newlyweds have only been married a few weeks, the video, which was posted on YouTube July 19, landed them a spot with Matt Lauer on The Today Show where their entire wedding party of seven bridesmaids, five groomsmen and four ushers gave an encore performance to Chris Brown’s “Forever”.

In an interview on Minnesota’s WCCO-TV, the couple said they plan on dancing through life happily-ever-after.

Congratualtions to these two overnight sensation. I hope their lives are filled forever with as much fun, joy and exciting as the way the started their unity together.

I traveled to the 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival to curate the "Jim Pollock: Phantasy Pheast" retrospective art exhibition presented by the 101/exhibit gallery (Miami, FL). When not working the tent, I also shot some music, art and scenes for my friends from Headcount.org.

We arrived Wednesday after a 9 hour drive from Chicago. The weather was hot and wet and remained steamy and moist throughout set-up. Fans started arriving Thursday afternoon as storms rolled in and the skies poured rain. By mid-afternoon the Pollock exhibition was packed as eager art collectors sought out the newest releases and rare works on display. That evening brought more rain and soaked fans sought steamy shelter inside the exhibition.

The 900SF booth was set up directly across from the "That Stage" which was curated by David Byrne Friday and offered acts such as Dirty Projectors, St. Vincent, Santigold & Ani DiFranco. We broke down the tent during Bryne's set opposite the Beastie Boys and escaped just in time to run over to the main "What Stage" to catch a late night Midnight-2am set by Phish. I hadn't shot a single act yet and decided to take a breather from the 80,000 fans gathered to catch Phish and venture over to shoot Flavor Flav, Chuck D, Terminator X and Professor Griff in Public Enemy performing their first album in its entirety, "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back". I returned to the booth in the middle of the morning to catch the Greg Gillis one man dance party known as Girl Talk. Gillis had concertgoers bumping til 5am as they crowded onto the stage to dance along to his crowd pleasing mash-ups.

Saturday brought clear skies, more interesting music from across the booth (Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis, Raphael Saadiq, Allen Toussaint, Alejandro Escovedo) and special guests. Phish keyboardist Page McConnell stopped by the booth for a private viewing by his former college roommate, Pollock. I escaped mid afternoon to capture some shots of surprise guests Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer All Star Band. The tent stayed open until main stage headliner Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band swept the crowds from Centeroo.

Sunday was rough. Everyone’s feet and backs were hurting and my voice was completely gone thanks to screaming over the Thrash Metal acts playing opposite the tent. Cage of Elephants, Dillinger Escape Plan, High on Fire and others rocked hard as we strained to sell posters to throngs of poster collectors on the last day of the festival. We broke down the tent around 7pm missing Snoop Dogg's performance on the main stage opting to get everything packed up in time to catch the final performance of the evening from Phish starting at 8:30pm. Phish's first set included a special guest appearance by the Boss for Mustang Sally, Bobby Jean and a rollicking, set-closing Glory Days.

With a few items left to clean up back at the booth, Pollock and I made our way back to the R.V. for an early morning departure. Pollock worked by laptop on upcoming projects as I packed remaining supplies and toured the festival grounds one last time.

I'm back in Illinois tonight to post this blog but off again tomorrow to photograph the remaining shows in Phish's first leg of summer tour. Next week I'm off again to Miami, Florida to capture Pollock's VIP gallery opening at the 101/exhibit gallery. Be on the lookout for more photos of these exciting adventures upon my return in the coming weeks.

Commissioned for Marilyn Manson & 101 / e x h i b i t

I had the privilege of photographing Marilyn Manson's Trismegistus VIP Opening Reception at the 101 / e x h i b i t gallery in Miami, FL back in December 2008. These photographs, utilized to promote the gallery, were published in the Miami Herald in addition to being featured on the galleries website.

I created two unique albums for the gallery commemorating the exhibition. The first was a display piece used by the gallery to spotlight the opening night VIP event. The second was intended specifically for Marilyn Manson. I knew I wanted to create something as unique as Manson himself as his personal gift.

During the summer of 2008, I discovered an album crafter named Gena Ollendieck showcasing at an art fair in Illinois. I was immediately intrigued by Ollendieck's amazing abilities to masterfully craft hand-bound leather albums true to the classic 16th century process. Her work finds inspiration from old discarded objects, nature, vintage metals, black and white photographs, internal workings of broken pocket watches, typewriters, cameras and children's games. I immediately knew she was the perfect person to create such a one-of-a-kind album for Manson.

After designing the album from images captured at the event, I used a process of photo transferring where I printed the images in reverse onto a translucent, frosted, vellum-like paper and using 80% rubbing alcohol and a bone folder, applied the printed images to sheets of heavy-weight, gray, deckled-edge stonehenge stock by hand.

Using knowledge gathered from my recounting of the art show and subsequent VIP afterparty in addition to Ollendieck's own perception of Manson for inspiration, the twisted, leather 40 page, 12"X12" album was created.

An old mercury thermometer creates the rod holding the red curtains that sets the stage opening to the central focus of the green folded hands of a fairy representing absinthe, commonly referred to in historical literature as "la fée verte" or the "Green Fairy". This has an old tie tack around the neck of the fairy with mesh wings and an old ball bearing attached to the winding components of a clock. Small brads set into the sides of the green fairy and a red watch hand is set into the center of the body and the legs are tied. The fairy is set on top of an old pocket watch face and the back side of the fairy can be viewed from the inside of the book. The fairy is set on top of an old red lipstick and an old scale and pulley. The clock hand points to a magnified old button reading "Hard Road". A saw blade is set running into the frame of the composition and continues outside of the frame onto the books cover. At the baseline of the composition is an old medical vile, a awl, and a small vile 210 metric standard. Set in the background is an old metal tin from black flag and additional pins and needles. A gold metal plate with raised printing completes the cover reading "INSURED".

During the summer of 2004, my wife and I traveled the country registering young voters at concerts for the non-profit organization, Headcount.

Between 2004 and 2007, Headcount registered nearly 60,000 voters - more than any all-volunteer group in the country. They also set the all-time record for voter registrations generated on a single concert tour by registering over 12,000 people at Dave Matthews Band shows in 2004 which I worked and photographed. I've stayed on over the years as a voter registration volunteer and photographer.

Headcount is unrolling a new campaign and running ads in Rolling Stone, Spin and Relix magazines featuring one of my photos. Jamie Huntsman, Headcount's talented Artistic Director, used a shot I had captured at the 10,000 Lakes Music Festival in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota in 2006.

Look for my photo credit in the lower right hand corner of these popular music magazines next month.

Wedding & Portrait Photographer International Convention

This year's WPPI 2009 Convention saw over 10,000 wedding & portrait photographers converge on the MGM Grand for 5 days of intensive inspiration and fresh insight.

The 29th annual conference kicked off Thursday, February 12th with WPPI Plus Classes, Business Institute Classes and other industry focused events featuring platform speakers.

I arrived Sunday afternoon after a long morning of travel. My flight was set to arrive Las Vegas at 8am but I decided to give away seats on several flights that morning in exchange for future flight vouchers since I couldn't check into the hotel until 3pm. After skipping several direct flights and eventually flying Chicago's Midway airport to Phoenix to Las Vegas, I was up over $1,000.00 in free travel!

After checking into my spacious 1,500SF 2 bedroom Marque Suite in the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino I quickly ran downstairs to registeration in order to pick up my badge allowing me access to all the weeks classes & tradeshow. That evening I attended the WPPI/Canon Wedding & Welcome Reception which featured a mock wedding and reception captured by several legends of wedding photography including Joe Buissink, Bambi Cantrell, Jerry Ghionis, Denis Reggie & Yervant. The evening concluded with a stop up at a hotel suite party thrown by Finao album manufaturers. Their new brushed metal cover looks amazing and I can't wait to offer it to my clients!

I was up bright and early Monday morning after a late night at the craps tables to catch Mitche Graf's 8am-10am seminar followed by JB & DeEtte Sallee's afternoon lecture titled "No More Excuses! Every Wedding has Potential!". Later Monday evening I bounced between Chicago photographer Susan Carr's discussion on licensing images and Doug Gordon's "Fashionable Weddings" seminar. After a couple of quick trips to the Grand Buffett I was off to the MGM Arena to catch Nikon's "Big Night" which featured Blues Traveler from 9:30-11pm.

Tuesday morning I was up again early to catch Mike Larson's "Leadership & Influence" lecture which was followed by 3 hours of browsing new technology at the World's Largest Photography Tradeshow. That afternoon I caught Yervant's near capacity seminar titled "Re-Fresh, Re-Invent & Keep on Keeping ON..." which featured a Russian voilinist that accompanied his slideshows. Yervant featured the world premier of "Vertical Video" and a new album he's partnered with Graphi Albums to create. Following a quick bite I was back to see Jeff & Julia Wood's seminar on creating a boutique studio experience for clients; This was the most inspirational lecture of the week for me! The evening concluded with a walk down The Strip and more gambling at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino.

Wednesday morning as I prepared for check out I caught Parker J. Pfister's seminar titled "Being Black & White in a Saturated Market" which was very inspiring and educational. After a brief tour of the tradeshow to grab as many things as I could squeeze in my carry-on, I tried to catch a bit of Jessica Claire's "Top Ten" program but had to run and catch the shuttle back to the airport.

It was an amazing, exhauting, whirlwind educational experience that keeps me honed in on industry trends and the latest, greatest products I can offer my clients. I can't wait already to return next year!

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother hurried him along, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother insisted and the child began to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced the children to move on.

In the almost 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected a final haul of $32.17. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed.

No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most noted musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the tickets averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the metro station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of the general public. The precept was: in a commonplace environment at a random hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a few moments to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

In 1889, the Mayor of Joliet, Patrick C. Haley, envisioned a "Castle on the Hill" overlooking the city. He commissioned Frank Shaver Allen, a nationally known architect and Egyptologist, to design the massive limestone structure which took two years to complete. Standing three and one half stories, with massive front and back porches, the entire structure is stately and impressive.

The mansion surrounds you in stained glass windows, intricate friezes, ornate adornments, six fireplaces and all original woodwork in oak, cherry and mahogany.

(above) Shepard Fairey, one of the most popular, influential, contemporary artists in the world today poses for a quick shot with me during the VIP opening reception at the Scope Art Fair in Miami, Florida.

Fairey is most recognized for his series of posters supporting Barack Obama's candidacy for President in 2008 and his "André the Giant Has a Posse" campaign (later evolving into the "Obey Giant" campaign) that launched him to cult status.

Fairey created two distinct images, "Change" and "Vote", for use by the official Obama campaign, since his original image, which bore the word "Hope," could not be seen to have any official affiliation with the presidential campaign since it had been "perpetuated illegally", independently by the graffiti artist. Fairey distributed a staggering 300,000 stickers and 500,000 posters during the election campaign, funding his grassroots electioneering through poster and fine art sales.

His most recognizable portrait of President-elect Barack Obama was recently selected to hang in the Smithsonian acting as the official national portrait gallery among such American classics as Gilbert Stuart's unfinished George Washington.

His design company Studio Number One is credited for creating album cover work for the Black Eyed Peas's album Monkey Business, The Smashing Pumpkins' album Zeitgeist, Flogging Molly's CD/DVD Whiskey on a Sunday and the Led Zeppelin compilation Mothership.

Toots & the Maytals (above) are credited with coining the word

I'm down in Miami, Florida this week exploring the incredible Art Basel & Art Miami international art exhibits and photographing Marilyn Manson's show, Trismegistus (Greek for "thrice greatest"; Trismegistus is known in ancient Greece as the teacher of high magic and alchemy. He is the representation of the combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth) presented by Galerie Brigitte Schenk and the 101 Exhibit gallery.

I was at the gallery yesterday capturing these images of the final preparation for the show which opens with a VIP reception Thursday night followed by its public opening Friday the 5th.

American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art

Before my wedding photographer career began, I created and collected concert poster art. At one time, I managed a collective of artists who created work geared toward the entertainment industry. After graduating college I managed several art galleries that catered toward current and classic contemporary rock poster art, 21st century figurative, urban contemporary, pop-surrealism and modern illustrative design poster art. I hosted grassroots art shows throughout Chicago in backrooms of bars and other untraditional "galleries" bringing the art to the masses.

In 2001 I began a friendship with a famed concert poster artists named Jim Pollock who created much of the graphic design, concert posters, t-shirts and concert ticket art for the popular Vermont jamband Phish. I began documenting Pollock's unique process of hand-carving linoleum blocks and hand printing his posters utilizing an antiquated bookbinding press and his 19th century Washington Printers Proof Press in 2002. The process takes weeks to carve away layers of linoleum over several plates, each representing its own color. Registering and pressing each block to create an impression over thousands and thousands of pressings also is a very time consuming, intricate ordeal. The amounting body of work that Pollock has created spans over 2 decades and over 100,000,000 impressions on paper. I have been there to document everything from his original pencil sketches to his signing and numbering of these rare limited edition works.

Works sold at concerts from 1997-2000 now can command over $5,000.00 when kept in mint condition and sold to rabid collectors on ebay. Much of his collection, along with its incredible appreciation, can be observed on the not-for-profit art collector's community resource expressobeans.com.

Over the past 4-5 years, I've helped keep PollockPrint's collectors current on all the behind the scenes action happening at the studio by posting photos of pieces in production. I became the "Collectors Services" department in 2005 and have since answered collectors emails, updated the PollockPrints.com website, created and continue to moderate the PollockPosters.com forum, streamline artist-promoter negotiations, orchestrate promotion and publicity, hang and curate an annual art show at the PollockPrints studio and finally I travel to art and music festivals and gallery showings across the U.S. to help educate new customers and appease seasoned collectors by offering hard to find artists proofs and original renderings once these pieces have been archived and are available for purchase.

Today, the PollockPrints studio resides one door down from the Jason Kaczorowski Photography Studio inside the Bulldog Lock Company building in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood. I am working to release a new book featuring his art and my photographs documenting his labor intensive process in early 2009. Many of my photos of Jim have already been featured in books, magazines and various online media.

In 2007, while working the PollockPrints booth at the Flastock Poster Convention during the Pitchfork Music Festival, Pollock and I were interviewed for a yet-to-be-named poster art documentary. The newly named flick dubbed "American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art" looks incredible and I encourage you to check out the trailer below for more information on its 2009 release.

American Artifact is a movie that chronicles the rise of American rock poster art since its birth in the '60s. Director Merle Becker crosses the country interviewing rock poster artists from the different eras to discover that America is currently in the midst of a 21st century "rock poster art movement", where thousands of artists around the country are doing silk screened rock poster art inspired by their local scene, the music of our time, and the spirit of our era.

Time is running out ~ Album Ordering Holiday Delivery Deadline Approaching Fast ~ 11/12/08

Have you made a plan to schedule an appointment to finalize your wedding album design in order to receive your heirloom in time for Christmas?

Time is running out!

I'm booked the remainder of this week and am leaving next weekend for a shoot in Miami, Florida so I advise you to try and schedule an appointment next Monday-Wednesday if you want to assure delivery by December 24th, 2008.

Meeting upon my return from Florida will only leave you a few days to make a final determination on your album design if you'd like your book delivered before Christmas as the holiday ordering deadline is Wednesday,November 12th, 2008.
